National Heritage Month
DID YOU KNOW?
The Kayabang (Benguet’s Pride)
The Kayabang is one of the unique material cultures of the Benguet Igorots. It is out of the native bamboos called “bolo” or “anes”. Kayabang weaving is a household craft in the warmer places of Benguet where the anes grow abundantly. It is a form of backpack usually for women to transport produce such as camote and gabi from the “uma” or garden. It is put in place at the back with a wrap around woven material called “apid” or “epid” up to the forehead (106th Foundation Anniversary Nov 8 – Dec 2 2006 : Serials – Benguet 073).
As we celebrate the National Heritage month for the month of May, let’s remember this Benguet’s pride. Kayabang!
